Attracting approximately 300,000 visitors a year, Fountains Abbey and Studley
Royal is the National Trust's most visited pay-for-entry property. It was declared
a World Heritage site in 1987. The Abbey, Britain's largest monastic ruin, was
founded in 1132 by 13 Benedictine monks seeking a simpler life. They later became
Cistercian monks. The 822 acre estate, open daily all year round. Visit
