For 5,000 years the prehistoric stones of Stonehenge have stood the test of time. Each megalith can weigh up to 45 tons and probably took hundreds of men to drag and move upright. The stones are cared for by English Heritage for future generations.
Stonehenge is orientated to the rising and setting of the Sun and it is believed the banks and the circles were part of a huge astronomical calendar. Originally the outer circle was composed of 30 sarsen stones. Within this are pairs of upright stones with lintels in a horseshoe configuration - opening up to midsummer sunrise. The bluestones travelled all the way from Presilli Hills, some 150 miles away. Some of the tools used to shape the stones can still be seen today in Salisbury Museum.
